In a major embarrassment for the Punjab Police, the Station House Officer (SHO) of Bhindi Saidan police station in Amritsar has been arrested following the recovery of 2 kilograms of heroin from his possession. The accused officer, identified as Shashpal Singh, was produced before an Ajnala court on Monday, which subsequently remanded him to one day of police custody for further interrogation. The arrest follows a rigorous internal investigation initiated after senior officials received intelligence regarding the officer’s illicit activities.

Preliminary investigations reveal that a consignment of narcotics, smuggled across the border via a drone, had fallen into the SHO’s hands. Instead of adhering to established legal procedures and documenting the seizure, the officer allegedly misappropriated the heroin for his own purposes, reportedly destroying a portion of the cache while attempting to conceal the remainder. Upon receiving credible information regarding the breach of protocol, SSP Sohail Mir ordered an immediate probe, which confirmed that the consignment had never been entered into official police records. Following the confirmation of his involvement, the SHO was placed under immediate suspension.

The Bhindi Saidan police station, situated near the sensitive Pakistan border, has been at the centre of security concerns recently. It was the target of a grenade attack on March 30, an incident for which a video later surfaced showing two individuals hurling explosives at the facility. While a group identifying itself as the ‘Khalistan Liberation Army’ (KLA) claimed responsibility for the attack on social media, alleging it to be retaliation for an alleged fake encounter, the police had dismissed the claims as fraudulent at the time. The department is currently conducting a thorough investigation into the officer’s activities to determine if he has links to wider narcotics or criminal networks. Authorities have assured that no individual found complicit in this case will be spared, and the ongoing custodial interrogation is expected to reveal further details regarding potential accomplices.
